Probably the MBA You already have a lot of experience. The MBA is a general degree designed to train student to enter any area of management. Most MBA programs accept students with any undergraduate degree. The MBA is in contrast to the MS degree which trains students to reach higher levels of knowledge in their specialty so that they can serve as better staff and researchers, with no intention of becoming high level managers.

Consult the Official MBA Guide, a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, etc), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. You can use the Guide to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. I would choose MBA. You can use that for any field you go into in the future. ITM limits you, and doesn't really give you a leg up on anyone else. Your experience and knowledge matter more than the degree in the IT field. If you want to end up in administration and management, go with the MBA.

Probably the ITM. The need for this is growing extremely rapidly. An MBA is a general degree, while the ITM is much more specialized and is more in tune with what you are doing and expect to do.

If you want to do this just so that you can tell people you have a PhD — then it is fine.

If you actually want to do something with your PhD — then it would be idiotic. If you want to be a college professor, then you should go to the best program you can get into. Indiana State is a fourth tier university (according to US News). If you can get into a PhD program — you can do much better.

As for price — most PhD students get fellowships or teaching assistantships. These include payment of tuition and fees as well as a stipend to cover living expenses. So it turns out to be cheaper getting a PhD in person,

The MS in Technology Management is a highly valuable degree that is too much overlooked. The easiest path is through a BSIT/BSTM in Technology, but the MSTM often accepts grads of other degrees. The MSTM is an excellent degree more MBA candidates should have taken instead.

The only problem is that Columbia’s MSTM is not ATMAE-accredited, but this is not a big factor at the Master’s level.

Don’t expect to be managing Engineers directly, however. They are likely to have little respect for MSTM or PhD-Technology grads who don’t themselves have years of (real) Engineering experience. A fresh-out-of-school boss is at risk of being cut to pieces by a group of hard-nosed engineer subordinates. (I’ve seen it happen).

My daughter is taking her MS is exactly this, with an emphasis on transportation. She is as a smaller school but is doing great at it. She loves the subject and is just wrapping up a great fellowship in this field. For next fall, she has the pick of four, so far, offers for a fully paid PhD. Basically, she is working on transportation policy and will end up being the boss of a bunch of engineers, making more money than them.

I would suspect that this is a course for prospective information technology employees or specialists who wish to have the education needed to be able to eventually function in a supervisory or managerial capacity within the IT field. I suppose it would be similar to a management class but focusing on the IT job environment.

Since the school itself is a legitimate accredited school and each of the programs are accredited by legitimate bodies, I'd consider it fine. It's a very specialized degree, so you aren't going to find a body that accredits a program like that, so it will need to fall under the umbrella of the 3 sponsoring programs.

Start checking out job openings in places like Monster.com or yahoo.com. Figure out where you want to be. Sometimes you have to start at a lower level to get the experience you need to manage it.

It seems to me… what I learned in college did nothing more than prepare me to learn the REAL IT World. My knowledge is all experience hands on based.

Its about time …
Its about time something should be done about the techno-abuse of children and teenagers. The key word of course is balance. I am a 60 yr old guy who rides a freeride bike for hours daily summer and winter, and I find it deeply disturbing that in beautiful weather summer or winter it is very rare to see children or teens outside doing physical activity. And I live in a middle class suburb. Children and teens today are being robbed of their freedom and childhood. It is truly disgusting.

When I was a kid we …
When I was a kid we could hardly wait to get outside when the weather was nice. We knew every path in the woods and spent every nice day at the beach. We ran and bicycled for the joy of it. Most kids were sinnewy and lean and you hated it when it got dark and you had to go home. We snowshoed and skated in winter or just played in the snow. Now what do you see; kids and teens sitting slack-jawed for 8hrs a day in front of screens. Pitiful is the word. No real social life.

One day last year …
One day last year at the beach, I saw two young teens trying to do some necking and kissing; both were interrupted by cellphone calls from their parents checking up on them. These teens are being robbed of their freedom and their right to explore the world and make the learning mistakes that allow you to grow. I believe that video games today are truly addictive and poisonous. I am sure there are 35yr old people still living in their parents’ basement who never see the light of day gaming.

Also disturbing is that children and teens have been brain-washed by parents and mass media into thinking if they do go out and explore the world, some adult is going to attack them; no adult except an out-and-out psycopath is ever going to attack a young person; this is extremely rare. Risk must be put into perspective. Save your child; ban video games and only allow techno-crap on bad weather days. Get rid of ’structured’ activity and let your child or teen play spontaneously outside. Enough!

@crisrowan1- I suppose it would mean babysitting and controlling children and teens with technology (cellphones, video games, computers, tv etc) rather than giving them some trust and freedom. Paranoia about safety, over-protectiveness, and educational overdrive has gone beyond reason, robbing young people of the freedom of the outdoors. You need contact with nature in the company of friends a few hours a day to feel like a human being. It was and is a joy I will always remember.

I think this is going to be slightly different depending on what uni you go to. If you are interested in a particular universities program they usually have brochures and information seminars. I had looked at one of these courses as well, mine seemed to be mostly IT courses with a few management ones thrown in.
